It takes practice to rewire neural circuitry, to re-encode pathways with empathy, attunement, and compassion. Unfortunately, for most this foundation was not available; there was no holding environment that could contain, dance, and play with the magic of a little emotional being.
Intellectual understanding, while important, is not enough. It takes action in the moment, a new response to the eruption of dysregulating thoughts and feelings, over time, to reorganize the nervous system and re-author a new, more integrated narrative about who we are.
The good news is that you can begin right now, no matter what is going on in your life. Instead of urgently seeking relief, become curious about the unique ways you become activated in relationship. Instead of falling into the habitual extremes of dissociation and fusion, enter into communion with the burning, the charged, and the claustrophobic, unresolvable alive world of feeling.
The journey of metabolization occurs in stages, which we cannot skip. Initially, we must train ourselves to stay with the intensity for very short periods of time, titrating and pendulating the overwhelming thoughts and feelings, going back and forth testing our window of tolerance. Slowly, we discover that even though it may feel otherwise, we can endure this material. Our survival is not actually being threatened. Before we can begin to move deeper, we must first know in an experiential way that staying with it is not going to take us down.
Once the nervous system has the experience that it can tolerate very small doses, we then stay for two seconds, instead of one. We move from merely “tolerating” to starting to contain it, realizing it is not some enemy coming at us from the outside, but a lost aspect of ourselves, longing to be allowed home.
Once contained, we can begin the journey of accepting it. Not “acceptance” in that we are condoning or settling for something – or that we “like” it or “want” it to say – but in the sense of a fiery, compassionate willingness. We are willing to experience what has come, finally, for we sense that resisting what is, this whole play of experiential avoidance, is the root cause of nearly all our psychological suffering.
We are no longer willing to abandon ourselves. No, I’m not going to do that any longer. Even though it takes everything in me, I am going to move toward my vulnerability and care for it, re-encoding a new pathway. Even though I will not be “perfect” at it and likely “fail” over and over again, I will remain steadfast in my vision.
This is where the work shifts to a more heart practice, where we aren’t as interested in clear insight and pure awareness, safe as a witness on the sidelines, but rather begin to explore what it would actually mean to open our hearts to our pain. To hold it like a mother surrounding and enveloping her baby. This can be pretty radical and truly goes against the grain. We start to bring kindness to the feelings, to the parts of ourselves we had to disown at an earlier time.
It just moves on from there, with deeper and more integrated forms of awareness, compassion, and exploration, traveling into the core of whatever arises and touching it with our hearts. Eventually we may even come to love our triggers, longing to hold them and know their subtleties, standing in awe at the opportunity to learn more about love as it comes into form.
Depending on the degree of trauma and dysregulation, this work is often best done within a safe (yet provocative) relational container, where we can make use of an attuned other’s calm and soothed nervous system to help contain, hold, and integrate this material. That’s not to say that we cannot do a lot on our own. It is kind to allow ourselves to at times turn to another for help, while at other times to stay contained and practice on our own.
In this way we can become vehicles of love in action, knowing that this work we are doing is never for ourselves alone. But is for life everywhere.

Hi everyone! I came across these two sweet little gems, and I like to share!  Koans are amazing as a method of contemplation – very expansive.  They bring insight, humor, wonder, and inner freedom.
Stephen Mitchell (translator of spiritual texts and husband to Byron Katie) is reading excerpts from two of John Tarrant’s books. The beginning of the video is empty air time, so please forward to the time markers listed below!
22:15 – 26:30 First excerpt is read from the book The Light Inside the Dark.

26:30 – 33:30 Second (and my favorite) excerpt is read from the book Bring Me The Rhinoceros and Other Koans to Bring You Joy. I highly recommend this particular bit if you have six or seven minutes to listen!
FYI at 17:38 – Sound for the video begins, Stephen Mitchell introduces/talks a little bit about John Tarrant
Loving you all!
Chris

There are so many amazing techniques, methods, books, steps. They can be so useful, but they can also distract us from ourselves – separates us from ourselves. Like mental candy that lures us away from our own ability to feel and sense what is real and true for us right here and now. All these brilliant, complicated processes can convince us that if we could just try hard enough and apply the latest idea in the right way, we would solve whatever “problem” we are facing in the moment. But it’s always the same problem isn’t it? Something is wrong with our lives, something is wrong with us, something is just WRONG. “Something’s wrong” becomes the general tone and foundation of life itself. So we seek solutions, we read, we are sure that the latest author is right and if we could just do what they did, then all of our “issues” will be resolved. But all these mental stories and fabulous new ideas on how to solve “the problem” all stay within the paradigm that there is, in fact, a problem. All of those methods and latest ideas just keep distracting us from the fact that there might not even BE a problem. They keep us moving, keep us in action, and keep our attention away from our own inner knowing. They can add to our stories that want us to forget the underlying truth – that all is well. All IS well. All the time. No matter what life is presenting, it is love showing up in some form or another.

What about that? What about those ancient bedrocks of mystical, spiritual, religious and inner knowing: All is well. Love is truth. We keep forgetting it. We get confused by the complicated, storytelling, identity-perpetuating mind. But in the end, everything always reduces down to love. Love is the answer. Trust only love. As a mentor of mine in Boulder used to say to me, “Any thought that isn’t loving is a lie.” Not to say that anger or sadness or any other feeling isn’t worthy of our attention. But those too are Love showing up with something FOR us. And each of them deserves to be met with love, and included in love.
All the pretty mental complications aren’t safer. Just more familiar. How funny that we are afraid to surrender to TRUST and LOVE. But in the end, everything always boils down to their truths. We can let it be that simple, pure and powerful.
Here is to all of us sinking down into our hearts and inner knowing. Here is to all of us trusting and loving ourselves and the well-being of Life itself!
Co Create plateI love this reminder to allow the universe – and other people themselves – to participate in our creations. Isn’t the idea to allow in new ideas and directions so that together we can create far more than what we could have by ourselves? To me that’s one of the huge joys of relationships and life itself. Together we are more and grow exponentially more than if we cling only to what we can conjure within our minds.

I was talking to a friend recently who was thinking about entering into a relationship, but she had already decided what all of his answers would be, how they would work out logistics, and that it wouldn’t work – and she had never even talked with him about any of this! She had it all mapped out and had lived the entire relationship before he ever was even allowed to join in! I have done the same thing, and so have many of my clients – we all have. We get an image in our minds and reject anything that doesn’t match it. As if we have a check list – or scavenger hunt list – and are so busy trying to find those items we walk right past the most gorgeous things and don’t even see them, labeling them as “not what I’m looking for.”

I have to say, it would be a bummer if I was limited to only what I can imagine in my own, small, human mind. Pretty sure the universe has a bigger repertoire and more resources than the singular perspective of “me” does. And I’m sure that other people have wonderfully different, new, fresh-to-me ideas, resources and perspectives. Sign me up for a co-creative life, relationships, and world. I’m definitely willing to be surprised. I’m willing and honored to embrace the Mystery in all its infinite love and infinite ways of expressing it.

Beautiful friends! This post is long, but I really want to share the HUGE ecstatic experience I had last Saturday! As you’ll read in a minute, I know that the biggest part of you already knows about it! (We are all one consciousness!) But I’m going to share it with your personality too!  And honestly, selfishly, by sharing it with you, I get to re-live it a little bit!
So, as part of my morning practice, I was feeling into my future life. The biggest component of all my personal visions for the future is that I KNOW myself as love. I always start by imagining myself standing with my hands on some kind of balcony railing or low wall, looking out over a gorgeous view and feeling myself radiating love effortlessly, just because I now know it is me. It is All.  I feel myself fountaining lovebeing love, and having a felt sense of that experience radiating into all things. It washes over me, emanates from me, it is me and I am completely aware of my wholeness.  I am aware that All things are in one, whole, and that wellbeing is the true reality. I stand there as Divine wellbeing and Divine Union. And because I truly know it, I naturally make that frequency more accessible and real for all people and things. AND I feel life itself adoring me back.  It’s all one.
When I envision this, I usually tap into a fair amount of emotion in that moment of meditation.  But on Saturday morning the vision came and TOOK me. I was completely flooded with so much bliss and ecstasy that I started sobbing and laughing at the same time.  The Vision was visioning ME. It felt like it was informing me and expanding my consciousness about this reality.  The “intelligent ecstasy” started revealing to me little – and big – details that were new to my vision, and each one sent new waves of wild joy and tears through me. Regardless of big or small, every one of them sent bursts of radical bliss through me because they were so perfect and I hadn’t ever envisioned those specifics before. Things that I or other people in the vision said, details about the way things looked, about or the environment I was in. And other very real, “big” knowings were “downloaded” into me about the quality, effect and psycho-spiritual-somatic experience of actually living that kind of love.  My body and being experienced how it would be to co-radiate that love with a partner and others in my life…. On and on! It was like angels running around, striking bells of rejoicing in my body! Waking up frequencies and activating them in me.
Whatever I experienced in the vision itself, I was actually feeling “real time” as I sat there in the chair!  It just kept coming in waves!  The vision, and all that love, all that bliss and felt experience wouldn’t turn loose of me. The vision “kept me” focused on it and all its details for a good 45 minutes. Then the specifics of the images themselves drifted away and I was left in a massive field of pure ecstasy.  I just sobbed and laughed and was in an altered state for most of the day.  It faded and returned me to “regular” reality by late afternoon, but I was still vaguely unfocused.
This is almost an incidental side note: In that Oneness, I was aware of EVERYTHING. I was effortlessly aware that I stood in the endless field, the infinite existence of All Things. Almost lazily and out of vague curiosity, I tuned in to All–Health. Just being curious and giving it some thought, Health came into focus and emerged out of the field – distinguishable from the rest of the All for a moment, but it really was just one of the faces of inseparable Wholeness. The awareness of health flooded my body, dancing and playing! But nothing was “healed” because I was already whole of course. Again, out of a mild curiosity, I turned my attention to the inherent wealth aspect of All Things. Like health, the infinity of abundance came into focus, showing its obvious eternal presence. I had no need for these things. In the state of ecstatic Oneness I knew with cellular certainty that these things were already fact. Kind of like knowing full well that we are surrounded in air and breathing all the time, and yet deciding to take a deep breath on purpose. Miraculous! And it’s simultaneously no big deal. That’s just how it is. Never ending miraculousness, bliss, love, health, wealth, and, and, and…. is the true norm.
At one point my brain popped in with the urge to call several folks and tell them. But it instantaneously struck me as a completely hilarious, ridiculous idea!! It just sent me into more laughter and sobs of joy.  I knew that calling anyone was so completely unnecessary since we are already one!
I can generate feeling with the best of them, but THIS level of being VISITED by bliss has only ever happened once before.  I called it my “walk of ecstasy,” which I was gifted with when I went to Maui a couple of years ago.  That one came very unexpectedly, without me having sat down to participate in any kind of conscious spiritual practice!  And THAT one had me sobbing and laughing for about 5 hours, then turned me loose into “functional” bliss for about 3 days.  It faded the day after I got home.
“Functional bliss.” I guess that’s pretty much what I’m aiming for! So that the “altered state” that I experienced last Saturday becomes common. The “norm.” They say there’s no roof to ecstasy and joy.  Imagine the new heights of bliss they could come visit if my altered state was every day ecstasy!
I’ve been engaging in some new-to-me spiritual practices that I am sure  helped open me so that I could fully receive the gorgeous experience last Saturday. I’ll try to post soon and share some of those in case those sound useful to you too.

In the meantime, SO MUCH LOVE to you all!

I-see-me-and-I-love-me-color“EVERYTHING is an expression of God’s (Source’s, the Universe’s) Eternal Loveliness.”
— St. Francis of Assisi

“Sometimes a thing needs to be retaught its loveliness.”
— Thomas Merton
I recently found these quotes in a book I am reading called Loveability,by Robert Holden.  I love them because they describe what I do. I reteach folks (put them back into contact with) their unique, eternal loveliness. We forget how truly Divine and perfect we are, AS we are. Right now. I love to remind you (and me) about that.
For as long as I can remember, I have consciously worked to “unfold” myself. I keep opening myself to being as “Christina” as I can. Why?  Because I have an inherent knowing that it is my function in the Universe to be the particular, lovely expression of God that I am. (Fill in the word of your choosing if you don’t like the word God. Who cares what we call the unnamable anyway…?!) I’ve had lots of conditioning that has created blocks to me knowing my “loveliness.”  But even as I tango with those blocks, I know they aren’t real. I’ve gathered a pretty fantastic bag of tools to help me reorient to the truth. And because putting myself back into contact with my loveliness – and expanding into that – is my whole focus in life, that’s of course what I created as my “job” with others.  With all YOU eternal lovelies! It’s agonizing to forget your own eternal, gorgeous nature and to think anything less than loving thoughts about yourself. And I can so EASILY see how magnificent each of YOU are!
So I hope this new doodle helps you reconnect with sublimely loving thoughts about yourself and your own value as a beautiful expression of the Indivisible One!   May we remember that we are love, we are loving and we most certainly are LOVED!
I love YOU!
e-hugs, Chris
